Pretoria, South Africa – In a ceremony held at the Union Buildings' Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre in Pretoria, President Cyril Ramaphosa took the oath of office today, commencing his second term as the President of South Africa. The ceremony, which marks the beginning of another five years of leadership for Mr Ramaphosa, was attended by several prominent African leaders.

Despite the African National Congress (ANC) failing to secure a majority in the recent elections, with less than 50% of the vote, President Ramaphosa is expected to form a coalition government. The ANC will seek the support of opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), GOOD, and Patriotic Alliance (PA), to establish a functioning government.

In his inaugural address, President Ramaphosa emphasised the necessity of national unity. "This is the beginning of a new journey," he declared. "It is crucial for us to cooperate in uniting the people of our country, fostering peace and stability, building an inclusive economy, fighting racism, and ensuring equal opportunities for both men and women."

The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. In total, eighteen African leaders were expected to be present at the event, underscoring the significance of South Africa's role on the continent.

President Ramaphosa's vision for his second term focuses on economic growth, social cohesion, and addressing the persistent challenges of inequality and unemployment. His administration aims to implement policies that will create a more equitable society and provide opportunities for all South Africans, regardless of their background.

The formation of a coalition government represents a significant shift in South African politics, highlighting the need for collaboration and compromise in the country's political landscape.
