The Mayor of Harare, Mr Jacob Mafume, says that his council will not follow the recommendation of the minister of regional justice, Mr July Moyo, to return its contract with the company Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd for waste management in Pomona, which it has cancelled.
Mr Moyo wrote a letter to the council this week asking it to discard its resolution for the meeting held on 03 August saying it is against section 314 (Chapter 29:15) of the Urban Councils Act and is not in the public interest.
The council had written a letter to the regional justice department on September 26 announcing its decision, saying that it does not have the money it is supposed to pay per month, which Mr Mafume says is more than a million US dollars per month.
We tried hard to contact Mr Moyo but he was not answering his phone. But in his letter to the council, Mr Moyo says that the Harare council should not oppose the courts.
On the other hand, Mr Mafume says that he will read the letter's contents and sit down to see what steps to take. Still, he encourages the public to take action, saying that the money that is being stolen in the corruption that he says is happening in this permit does not come from his pocket, but from the pockets of the public.
